“How think ye? If a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?”
Matthew 18:12 (KJV)
Jesus told this story right after His disciples asked who was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. His answer turned the question upside down: heaven’s attention goes to the one who is small, overlooked, or lost. The shepherd doesn’t wait for the sheep to find its way home. He goes into the mountains himself, and Jesus says he rejoices more over that one than over the ninety-nine that never left.
Isaiah wrote, “All we like sheep have gone astray.” We have all been the one.
