How I Finally Understood the Bible
After 20 Years of Feeling Lost in It

I still remember closing my Bible on a Tuesday morning in February. Coffee gone cold on the nightstand. Kids not up yet. I'd made it through Genesis, felt that familiar warmth in my chest, told myself this time is different — and then hit Leviticus like a wall.

I set the Bible back on the nightstand as quietly as I could, like I was trying not to wake someone. And then came that feeling I'd carried for years — that low, uncomfortable guilt that I, a woman who had been going to church since she was seven, simply could not get through this book.

I wasn't failing God. I was failing to navigate a book nobody had ever properly explained to me.

Here's what I wish someone had said out loud in church: the Bible is not one book. It's 66 books, written across more than 1,500 years, by dozens of authors, in three languages, across wildly different cultures and political climates. Some of it is poetry. Some is ancient law. Some requires understanding the fall of the Assyrian Empire to make any sense at all. We hand this to people — sometimes children — say "read this," and wonder why they feel overwhelmed.

It was never a faith problem. It was a missing map problem. And I spent twenty years blaming myself for something that was never my fault.
