Then Exodus: a lamb's blood on the doorframe and death passes over. Then Isaiah 53, written about 700 years before Bethlehem: "he was pierced for our transgressions."
So when John the Baptist points at Jesus and says "Behold, the Lamb of God," every Jew standing there knows exactly what he means. The cross isn't God changing His mind about forgiveness. It's the payment He'd been pointing at since the garden.
